MLB NEWS AND NOTES
Saturday’s Streaking And Slumping Starting Pitchers

By Covers Staff

Streaking

Javier Vazquez (9-7, 4.54 ERA), New York Yankees

Vazquez is going head to head against a pitcher fresh off a no-hitter but you could still make an argument that the Yankee hurler is in a better pitching groove than the Rays Matt Garza.

The former Atlanta Brave is 3-0 with a 2.77 ERA in July. The Yanks are 7-3 in his last 10 starts and the under is also 7-3 over the same stretch.

Tom Gorzelanny (6-5, 3.22 ERA), Chicago Cubs

Not much is going right for the Cubs these days. Gorzelanny, who’s supposed to be a back-of-the-rotation guy, is arguably Chicago’s best starter right now while Carlos Zambrano, who’s supposed to be their ace, is figuring out things in anger management classes.

Gorzelanny owns a 2.82 ERA over his last five appearances and the Cubs are 4-0 in his last four starts.

Slumping

Jeff Suppan (0-6, 6.18 ERA), St. Louis Cardinals

The Cards didn’t land Roy Oswalt which means they’re still looking for somebody to mercifully take over Suppan’s spot in the rotation. St. Louis is 2-7 in Suppan’s seven starts since he was rejoined his former team.

Here’s the weird part: the under is 6-1 in those seven games despite Suppan’s 4.50 ERA. Might have something to do with higher totals. Oddsmakers put the total at 12 in Suppan’s last appearance.

Brad Bergesen (3-9, 6.95 ERA), Baltimore Orioles

It’s hard to remember all the promise Bergesen showed in 2009. That’s because there’s been little shine to his performance in 2010.

Newly appointed manager Buck Showalter is scratching his head now trying to figure out how to get Bergesen back on track.

All we can say is good luck, Buck.

The 24-year-old is 0-6 with an 8.92 ERA in his last eight starts.

HOT LINES

Saturday's Best MLB Bets

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays (-113, 8.5)

Let's hope Matt Garza enjoyed his no-hitter in his last outing against the Tigers because he isn't going to throw one tonight against the Yankees.

At least not with Alex Rodriguez, who is batting .467 lifetime against Garza, in the lineup. A-Rod may be having a hard time hitting No. 600 but all his other stats are on the rise.
A-Rod has at 19 RBIs in his last 31 games, leading all of baseball with 38 since June 21. As goes A-Rod so goes the Yankees, who are 22-9 during that span.

"I'm focused on what we keep doing every night - playing good baseball and winning," said Rodriguez, who leads all of baseball with 38 RBIs in his last 31 games.

Starter Javier Vazquez also has heated up with the weather, going 3-0 in his last four outings and allowing only a total of eight earned runs during those 26 innings.

Vazquez hasn't faced the Rays since losing in opening week and Garza has managed to dodge the Yankees all season, but he is 1-3 lifetime against them.

Despite the Rays' recent hot streak, they have only been batting .227 against righties over their last 10. Look for Vazquez to steal Garza's thunder tonight.

Pick: New York Yankees

Atlanta Braves at Cincinnati Reds (-105, 8.5)

Atlanta starter Jair Jurrjens is 3-0 since returning from the DL, but he hasn't had to face the Reds, who have a track record of success against the righthander.

Jurrjens is 0-2 lifetime with a 6.75 ERA in three starts against the Reds, who are batting .303 against righties over their last 10, almost 50 points better than the Braves.

Cincinnati counters with righty Bronson Arroyo, who is 5-3 against the Braves and is coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Brewers in which he allowed only three hits over eight innings. He threw 66 of his 88 pitches for strikes and threw first-pitch strikes to 19 of the 27 batters he faced to lose despite a strong performance.

"The end of the game, I play a mental chess match," Arroyo said. "That's how I win ballgames."

This time expect him to check-mate the Braves.

Pick: Cincinnati Reds

CFL NEWS AND NOTES
CFL Betting Preview
By Bodog

Saturday: Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Saskatchewan Roughriders (6:30 p.m. ET)

Hamilton (1-3 SU and ATS) enters Saturday’s game tied with Edmonton for the worst record ATS in the CFL. Currently sitting in last place in the East, Hamilton has had great play from quarterback Kevin Glenn (1090 yards, five touchdowns, one interception), but has not been able to get DeAndra Cobb and the running game going. Hamilton’s 71.5 rushing yards per game ranks worst in the league.

The Roughriders (3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS), meanwhile, have the league’s best rushing attack, averaging 178 yards per game. RB Wes Cates has 400 yards and three touchdowns in 57 carries this season. The passing game has been strong as well, with QB Darian Durant leading the league with 1,325 passing yards. Saskatchewan will be heavily favored this week despite dropping their first game of the season last week at Calgary, 40-20.

The Tiger-Cats have seen three of their first four games go UNDER, while the offensively stacked Roughriders have gone OVER in three of their four contests.

Saturday: Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Calgary Stampeders (9:30 p.m. ET)

The Blue Bombers (2-2 SU and ATS) will play away from home for just the second time this season when they take on Calgary on Saturday night. The first time they didn’t fare well, falling 28-7 at Hamilton as 4-point underdogs. It was an uncharacteristically low score for Winnipeg, whose 137 points scored this season are tied with Montreal for the league’s highest. With QB Buck Pierce still out with a knee injury, Steven Jyles will start his second straight game.

Calgary (3-1 SU and ATS) is coming off of a huge home win over Saskatchewan last week, earning them a share of the Western Conference lead. WR Romby Bryant had seven catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns in the rout. The Stampeders are 2-0 ATS at home with that win and a win over Toronto in Week 1. Steven Jyles will have his work cut out for him trying to crack the Calgary defense, which has surrendered a league-best 85 points over the first four games of the season.

Winnipeg ranks first (with 341.5 per game) and Calgary ranks second (371.5 per game) in total yards surrendered this season. Despite their low yardage surrendered number, Winnipeg’s games have gone OVER in three of their four contests this year, while Calgary has split 2-2.

CANADIAN BACON

Saturday's Best CFL Bets

Hamilton Tiger Cats at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-7.5, 54.5)

The Roughriders will want to rebound from their 40-20 loss to Calgary after winning their first three games of the 2010 season. Riders coach Ken Miller still can’t gut watching that game.

“I can’t look at it clinically yet” he told reporters Tuesday.

Uncharacteristically, the Riders have the worst defence in the CFL. The question now is: how will they stop the third-best passing team in the league?

The Riders are third in the league in scoring with an average of 33.8 point per game. They also surrendered a league-high 32.2 points per game, so this game should be a gun fight.

Quarterback Darian Durant got rocked way too much by the Stampeders’ pass rushers last week, although, he was only officially sacked twice. His offensive line must do a better job of giving him time in the pocket.

It will be an interesting matchup, but the Riders should prevail.

Pick: Saskatchewan Roughriders

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Calgary Stampeders (-7, 57)

The Stampeders finally looked like a championship team again against the Eskimos last week. And it was without star receiver Ken-Yon Rambo, who claims he will be back in action against the Blue Bombers.

Winnipeg will also welcome a star player back. Safety Ian Logan seems to have recovered from a neck injury suffered during a pre-camp workout. Logan has been an anchor for the Bombers over the past few years.

But the Bombers will once again have to rely on quarterback Steven Jyles with Buck Pierce still injured. Jyles did well against Edmonton in Week 4, with 267 yards passing, 63 yards rushing and three touchdowns - two on run plays and another one through the air. But he also gave up two interceptions.

That’s not bad, but is it good enough to match Henry Burris and the Stampeders offence? Blue Bombers defensive back LaVar Glover summarized it best, “If you let Henry Burris get hot, he’s going to rip you apart”.

That’s exactly what will happen Saturday.

Pick: Calgary Stampeders

Key Stat

34 - Number of homerless plate appearances for New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez entering Friday night's game since he hit career No. 599 more than one week ago. It took A-Rod 28 plate appearances to make the leap from 499 to 500.

Injury That Shouldn't Be Overlooked

The Texas Rangers placed second baseman Ian Kinsler on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin, the second time that the All-Star has been sidelined. He missed the first 22 games of the season with a high ankle sprain and the Rangers started 10-12 in his absence, but they moved him to the leadoff position and they are 50-30 since. Kinsler is batting .298 with six home runs and 38 RBIs this season and could be a key loss for Texas at a critical time.

Game Of The Day

NY Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays (-110, 8.5)

Notable Quotable

"I just thought the guy’s got to come back in unbelievable shape, because if he comes back out of shape, looks bad, I mean, he’s just gonna get murdered. If he came back in shape, ready to play football, he’ll be there two days and everyone will forget what happened."
Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley said on July 22 of teammate Albert Haynesworth, who held out of voluntary offseason workouts. Haynesworth failed a conditioning test for the second straight day on Friday, preventing him from practicing with the team until he passes the drills.

Tips And Notes

The Oakland Athletics placed closer Andrew Bailey on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained intercostal muscle. The right-hander has 20 saves and a 1.56 ERA for the Athletics so far this season. The team will likely split the save opportunities between Michael Wuertz (2-2, 5.01), Brad Ziegler (2-4, 3.50) and Craig Breslow (4-2, 2.81), who have combined for only four saves this season.

The San Diego Chargers have become a sexy pick to finally turn the playoff corner this season, but they opened training camp Friday without three Pro-Bowl players, including linebacker Shawne Merriman, who said he will not report until the Chargers can promise him job security. Merriman's name was floated in trade rumors and he has not yet accepted the team's $3.269 million for this season. He joins fellow holdouts Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill.

The Baltimore Ravens are known for their defense, but that well-earned reputation may be in jeopardy this season. The Ravens' already-thin secondary suffered another blow Friday as cornerback Dominique Foxworth tore his ACL and will miss the entire 2010 season. Baltimore is already short on cornerbacks, as Fabian Washington and Lardarius Webb are returning from ACL injuries of their own and All-Pro safety Ed Reed may miss the first six weeks of the season as he is on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Frank Jordan
Seattle Mariners vs. Minnesota Twins (MLB) - Jul 31, 2010 7:10 PM EDT
Play: Money Line: 101     Minnesota Twins     Pick Title: Free al pick
Kevin Slowey has been great for Minnesota winning 9 games so far 5 of which have come at home where he is starting on Saturday against Seattle. Slowey has faced Seattle once this season going 7 strong innings allowing just 1 run and getting the win. This one won't be as easy as he is going up against King Felix who is 7-7 on the year but with an era under 3. Hernandez has faced the Twins once and went 8 strong innings allowing just one run and picking up the victory. Look for another great pitchers duel with Minnesota edging out a win in the end. Play Minnesota

Baltimore Orioles vs. Kansas City Royals (MLB) - Jul 31, 2010 7:10 PM EDT
Play: Total: 8/-128     Over     Pick Title:
FREE PLAY

It has been a rough few starts for Kansas City’s Zack Greinke as he makes his fourth straight start at home against the Orioles on Saturday night. His last time out, he gave up eight runs and eight hits in four innings of work against the Twins. Overall, he's 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in his last three starts giving up 15 runs and 18 hits in his last 18 innings pitched. The righty took a no-decision against the Orioles back in May as Nick Markakis (4-13), Julio Lugo (5-12), Brian Roberts (5-10), Adam Jones (3-8), and Luke Scott (2-4) all hit Greinke well. Greinke is backed by a Kansas City bullpen that has an ERA close to 5.00 at home. Baltimore’s Brad Bergesen continues to make starts despite being pretty bad this season. The righty is 3-9 with a 7.12 ERA in 16 starts. He's only averaging 5.3 innings per outing meaning a Baltimore bullpen that is already taxed should be involved tonight. The righty has given up 17 runs and 28 hits in his last 16.3 innings pitched. Bergesen lost to the Royals in Baltimore back in May after giving up four runs and 10 hits in 6.7 innings of work. Yuniesky Betancourt (3-9), Billy Butler (3-8), Jose Guillen (1-3), Chris Getz (1-3), and Alex Gordon (1-1) have good numbers against the Orioles starter. The Royals have gone Over the total in six straight games mostly due to bad pitching. The Orioles bullpen has an ERA near 4.40 on the road which has helped them go Over the total in five of their last six games. We expect another high-scoring game between the Orioles and Royals tonight.

Cajun Sports
Florida Marlins vs. San Diego Padres (MLB) - Jul 31, 2010 8:35 PM EDT
Play: Money Line: 101     Florida Marlins     Pick Title: Cajun Sports MLB 2-Star Complimentary Selection
The Florida Marlins have dominated the Padres on the West Coast going 6-1 their last seven trips to San Diego. The Marlins will send Ricky Nolasco to the bump knowing he is 8-2 on the highway this season with an ERA of 3.92 over that span. Ricky Nolasco is 11-4 in road games when playing against a team with a win percentage of 54 to 62 percent the last 3 seasons, 12-5 in road games versus teams averaging 2.75 or less extra base hits per game the last 2 seasons, 13-2 in road games versus teams averaging 0.9 or less homeruns per game the last 3 seasons, 9-1 in road games against NL West opponents the last 3 seasons and 8-0 in road games versus teams averaging 0.9 or less homeruns per game in the second half of the season the last 3 seasons. The Padres will send Kevin Correia to the hill with his 4-4 home record and ERA of 4.52 on the season. We will back the visitor here as a small underdog as the Marlins ride Nolasco to another victory on the West Coast on Saturday.

PROJECTED FORECAST: 2* Florida Marlins 4 San Diego Padres 3

By Bobby Maxwell

I'm here to hand you a FREE winner tonight with the Rays as they host the Yankees in this huge N.L. East matchup.
The Rays rallied to win Friday’s opener in this big A.L. East series and drew just a little closer to the Yankees in the standings. Tonight, they’ll make it two in a row behind right-hander Matt Garza (11-5, 4.06 ERA) who tossed a no-hitter in his last outing against the Tigers.
Garza struck out six and walked one in the 5-0 victory over the Tigers and in his last two home starts, he’s allowed just one hit and no runs in 15 innings, shutting out the Tigers and Yankees. Garza is 6-2 at home this season with a 3.61 ERA and he pitched very well in four starts against the Yankees last season, allowing a combined six earned runs in 26 innings of work. Javier Vazquez (9-7, 4.54 ERA) takes the ball for the Yankees against these Rays that tore into him back on April 9 in Tampa, getting eight runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings of a 9-3 victory. In Vazquez’s last two starts in Tampa, he’s allowed 14 runs in just 10 innings. Teams he’s started for have dropped seven of his last nine starts against the Rays. New York has dropped four of its last five Saturday games and the Yankees are just 3-7 the last 10 times Vazquez has started against a winning team. Tampa has won seven straight overall, 19 of their last 26 and 10 of their last 11 at home. The Rays are 18-6 when Garza is a home favorite, 19-7 at home overall and they’ve won each of his last six starts. Tampa knows that with a win today, the Rays have pulled themselves into a first-place tie with the Yankees. That is plenty of motivation for the Rays as they will get another quality start from Garza and win this one relatively easy.

4♦ TAMPA BAY

BRET ATKINS

Atlanta’s Jair Jurrjens is starting to look like the pitcher who won a combined 27 games the last two seasons. He has very good stuff and can absolutely dominate teams when he’s healthy. I know he had some hamstring issues last month, but he’s been very solid lately, going 2-0 in his last three outings with a 2.61 ERA.Bronson Arroyo is on the hill for the Reds. He was 1-2 in his last three starts with a 5.23 ERA. Last time out at home, Arroyo allowed the Nationals to get him for seven runs in 5.2 innings of an 8-5 loss.
Cincinnati is on skids of 2-6 against winning teams and 2-12 in Arroyo’s last 14 starts. The Braves come in on positive runs of 20-6 on Saturday, 7-2 against winning teams and 22-8 against the N.L. Central.

I’m backing the better squad today. Play the Braves.

3♦ ATLANTA (on a 1♦ to 5♦)

EZWINNERS

(903) Philadelphia Phillies -$121

6:05pm Central Time

The Philadelphia Phillies are red hot having won eight out of nine games and I expect them to get back to their winning ways after dropping last night's game. The Phillies starting pitcher Joe Blanton coughed up two first inning runs in his last start against the Rockies but settled down from there and picked up his first win since beating Cleveland on June 24th. I look for another solid outing by Blanton in this game and I expect the Phillies offense to provide him with plenty of run support as Washington sends Ross Detwiler to the mound for this start. Detwiler was unimpressive in first start of the season as he allowed five runs, on three hits in his 3 2/3 innings of work on Sunday against the Brewers. Detwiler faced 19 batters, walking three and striking out four in the 8-3 loss. Detwiler was called up from Double-A Harrisburg to make the start as Washington put SP J.D. Martin on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain and it looked like he went to the mound with Double-A stuff. I expect Philadelphia to hit Detwiler hard who has a career 1-7 record with a 4.71 ERA. Play on the Phillies.

Jim Feist
GAME: (924) CHICAGO WHITE SOX vs (923) OAKLAND ATHLETICS
PICKS: (924) CHICAGO WHITE SOX
REASON FOR PICK: The Oakland A's seem to be the only team that have been able to cool the red hot White Sox. The A's took two of three from Chicago last week up in the Bay Area. However, change of venue means different circumstances here on Saturday. The White Sox are a MLB best 33-11 since June 11 and almost unbeatable at home. Times had been tough for A's starter Dallas Braden. Braden pitched a perfect game back on May 9th and hadn't won a game since until his last time out on July 25th, a 6-4 win at home over these White Sox. In fact, the win snapped a five game losing streak for Braden. John Danks will start for the Sox, he's 11-7 this year with a 3.23 ERA. Danks has put together four very good starts in his last five chances. If you toss out the game against Minnesota back on 7/15, Danks has allowed just three earned runs in the other 30 2/3 innings. The White Sox are just too hot for me to pass on them here Saturday. The fact that Braden and the A's are here makes the line reasonable to lay. Take the White Sox on Saturday.

To whom it may concern: In the future, please give only winning horse tips to Hondo. Erma Lee failed to get 'er done in the 6th yesterday at Sara toga, which, along with Mr. Aitch's failure with the Reds, caused the debt to grow to 1,175 tartabulls.

Tonight, on Double-Dip Saturday, Mr. Aitch will direct his disposable dead presidents toward the Yankees and Pale Hose -- 10 units apiece on Vaz quez and Danks (for the memories).
