As I mentioned last night, the Pistons are in bad shape with point guard’s Will Bynum and Rodney Stuckey, as they had to reach into the D-League to bring up Walker Russell for last night’s game and the Pistons were out-scored by 12 points in the 20 minutes Russell was forced to play. My ratings favor Portland by 9 points in this game even without adjusting for Stuckey being out again and the Pistons have lost by an average of 20.2 points in the 5 games Stuckey has missed. My ratings favor Portland by 12 ½ points and I’ll take Portland in a 3-Star Best Bet at -7 or less and for 2-Stars up to -8 points.

When are people going to realize that New York is a bad team? The Knicks are now 6-9 straight up despite playing the easiest schedule in the league (3.1 points easier than average) and they’re only wins in 8 home games were against below average teams Boston and Charlotte by an average of just 3 points. The Knicks average home margin is -3.4 points despite hosting teams that are 2.7 points worse than average. Denver is a good team that will prove tonight how much better they are without Carmelo Anthony. The Nuggets are now 33-11-2 ATS since trading Anthony to the Knicks and New York has gotten worse since that trade. In those games without Anthony the Nuggets are 8-1 ATS when unrested and 12-1 ATS when facing an unrested team, as the lack of rest after last night’s game in Washington shouldn’t be an issue. My ratings favor Denver by 6 ½ points and I’ll take Denver in a 2-Star Best Bet at -3 or less.

Sacramento pulled off their second straight upset win last night in San Antonio (beat Indiana as 5 point home dog on Wednesday), but the Kings apply to a 64-127-7 ATS letdown situation that is based on those two upset wins (that angle is 6-39-1 ATS when applying to underdogs or 9 points or more) and facing Memphis when unrested has proven to be a tough task. Memphis now 20-2 ATS against unrested teams since the beginning of last season and 15 of those 22 games were won by double-digits. The fact that the Grizzlies played last night shouldn’t be a problem given that they’ve covered 10 straight and 15 of 16 when unrested. My ratings favor Memphis by 13 points in this game and I’ll take Memphis in a 3-Star Best Bet at -11 or less and for 2-Stars up to -12 points.

Play Strength: 3-Stars at -11 or less, 2-Stars up to -12.

Missouri State has lost 3 straight games, but the Bears are not playing poorly (2-1 ATS in those 3 losses and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games) and the losing streak will keep them from letting down against a bad Bradley team that has lost 10 of their last 11 games. Missouri State applies to a very good 39-5 ATS subset of a 90-40-1 ATS road favorite bounce-back situation and my ratings favor the Bears by 7 points – so the line is fair. I’ll take Missouri State in a 2-Star Best Bet at -7 or less.

Ball State is 16-3-1 ATS in their last 20 games against teams with a win percentage of .400 or less and the Cardinals apply to a very good 185-88-6 ATS big road favorite momentum situation. Northern Illinois, meanwhile, applies to a negative 50-102-2 ATS situation and a 26-66-1 ATS that plays against horrible teams as home underdogs (NIU is just 2-14 straight up). My ratings favor Ball State by 10 ½ points but I’m willing to give up a bit of line value to play such a strong set of situations and the Cardinals won big the only two times they were installed as big road favorites this season – a 23 point win as a 10 point favorite at Tennessee-Martin and a 21 point win as a 13 ½ point favorite at SIU Edwardsville. I’ll take Ball State in a 2-Star Best Bet at -11 or less and for 3-Stars at -10 or less.

This is a bad line. Using all games for each team would give me Tulane by 2 points, but UTEP is better if you exclude the early season games in which they were without their star player Gabriel McCulley, who averages 12.3 points on 62% shooting, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. Using UTEP’s games with McCulley brings the fair line down to Tulane by ½ a point but the Green Wave are without their best player Kendall Timmons. Tulane lost by 1 as a 3 point home favorite to Rice in their first game without Timmons and managed to cover in a 4 point loss at Tulsa (as a dog of 8 ½ points) thanks to 47% 3-point shooting. That randomly good 3-point shooting hid Tulane’s problem’s scoring inside the arc (12 for 33 on 2-point shots) and the Green Wave have made just 37% of the 2-point shots without Timmons. There is line value in favor of UTEP even without adjusting for Timmons, but Tulane is most likely going to be worse without him and I certainly don’t mind that the Green Wave are just 1-9 ATS in conference home games and 3-12-1 ATS after a loss (0-8 ATS conference home after a loss) under coach Ed Conroy. I’ll take UTEP in a 3-Star Best Bet at +2 or more and for 2-Stars from +1 ½ to -1.

New Mexico State is now 18-1-2 ATS as a conference favorite or pick, including 4-0 ATS this season, and I expect the Aggies to add to their current win streak against an overrated Hawaii team that will miss point guard Jeremiah Ostrowski, who is expected to miss tonight’s game with a staph infection. Ostrowski is a pure point guard that doesn’t shoot much (just 2.9 shots per game), but dishes out 6.2 assists per game and plays good defense. Hawaii averages 15.7 assists per game in 11 games with Ostrowski and just 12.6 assists per game in 7 games he has missed. Hawaii’s offense and defense aren’t as good in the 7 games that Ostrowski has missed this season and the Warriors are just 1-6 ATS when he doesn’t play. My ratings favor New Mexico State by 5 ½ points using all of Hawaii’s games and they should be favored by a couple more points with Ostrowski out. I’ll take New Mexico State in a 3-Star Best Bet at -4 or less and for 2-Stars up to -5 points.
