The Bottom Line:

Santa Clara +3 (5.5* NCAAB POD)

Not a very exciting match up by any means between two bad teams, but we are not about exciting match ups we just want to win money and I think this is the best opportunity to do that on Saturday. Santa Clara is a team searching for it's first conference win which is hard to believe considering this team beat Villanova and New Mexico and scored 54 points on Oklahoma in 2nd half of a game earlier in the year. They've had a lot of discipline issues throughout, but if there is a team they would need to face to get on the win board in conference play that would be Pepperdine.

Pepperdine has had suspensions and injuries of their own creating a huge depth issue which has led them to really slow the pace in which they can hardly ever get into a rhytm as they are averaging under 40% from field. Santa Clara can at least score points and run a bit and I think this is a great opportunity for them to get a win. They faced a similar type team in Eastern Michigan a few weeks back that was among the worst in the nation in possessions per game like Pepperdine and they came out with a win by 20 points. Santa Clara is averaging 7 more field goal attempts than their opponents and if they get that yet again they should be able to win. Clara is 9-4 ATS in their last 13 as a dog .5 to 6.5 while Pepp is 7-15 ATS in their last 22 as a home favorite.

Marshall +9 (4.4* bonus)
3 losses in a row and it's hard to believe this team was 13-4 just a week ago, but I think they come back and have an opportunity to win against Memphis that now has some depth issues with the injuries to Thomas and Carmache. Marshall is a team that won at Cinci and nearly upset Syracuse earlier in the year just to give you a little background. Yes we backed UAB in their last game as +400 and UAB delivered, but UAB was desperate for a win and now we turn the tables as Marshall to me is a team desperate to get a win. This is a team that gets it done with defense and rebounding. I think that will keep them in this game throughout as they are #6 in the nation in rebound % while Memphis is 115th. Memphis also 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 following a SU win of 20+ while Marshall is 10-4 ATS in their last 14 after a SU loss. Look for Marshall to pull off a shocker.

Memphis is coming off consecutive road losses to good teams (Blazers and Clippers), but the Grizzlies are 7-0 straight up and 6-1 ATS against teams with losing records in games since Zach Randolph was injured. Memphis also applies to a very good 85-25-1 ATS road bounce-back situation that is based on their two recent road losses and my ratings favor the Grizzlies by 5 points. I’ll take Memphis in a 3-Star Best Bet at -4 points or less and for 2-Stars up to -5 points.

Akron is also 49-21-1 ATS against losing teams when not favored by 17 points or more, so they generally beat up on bad teams. In addition to the team trends Akron applies to a 119-53-2 ATS road momentum situation and my ratings favor the Zips by 6 ½ points. I’ll take Akron in a 2-Star Best Bet at -6 or less.

Virginia is an underrated team that plays their best against better teams. The Cavaliers are 6-0 ATS in games when they’re not favored by more than 5 points and their only straight up loss was by just 3 points as an 11 point dog at Duke. The Cavaliers’ Princeton style offense is designed to work relatively better against better competition, which is why the Cavaliers have played so well against better teams and coach Bennett and not as well as a big favorite. Virginia is 6-0 ATS this season when facing a team that shoots 45% or better from the field and 6-1 ATS against teams that allow 42% shooting or better, which is more evidence that the Cavs play their best against good teams. My ratings favor Virginia by a point in this game with C Assane Sene out and NC State’s 55-74 loss at Carolina sets the Wolfpack up in a 45-124-7 ATS negative momentum situation. I’ll take Virginia in a 3-Star Best Bet at -1 or better and for 2-Stars at-1 ½ or -2.

I was a bit fortunate to win my Best Bet on Loyola Marymount +7 ½ against St. Mary’s on Thursday night, as the Lions lost by 7 points by scoring the last bucket, but that was the worst game that Loyola has played recently and they still covered. Loyola Marymount has now covered the spread in 8 consecutive games and I’m going to go with the Lions again today as they take out their frustrations on a bad Portland team. Loyola applies to a solid 109-56-4 ATS home favorite bounce-back situation and there is stil line value favoring the Lions.I’ll take Loyola Marymount in a 3-Star Best Bet at -13 points or less and for 2-Stars up to -14 points.

Cal Poly is coming off an upset loss at Pacific, but that loss should assure that the Mustangs will be focused for this game against a horrible UC Davis team. Cal Poly is 17-3-2 ATS in road games after a loss the last 3 seasons, including 11 straight spread wins, so the Mustangs have proven that they can rebound from a bad game. Davis is winless against Division 1 competition this season (4-13-1 ATS) with their median loss being by 15 points against a schedule of teams that is 6 points worse than Cal Poly on average. Even with this game being in Davis it is more than likely that the Mustangs will win by more than 15 points, especially considering that Davis applies to a negative 19-70 ATS subset of an 83-169-7 ATS weak home court situation. UC Davis is just 4-13 ATS at home the last two seasons and they have been relatively worse against better teams. The Aggies have played 5 decent teams this season (Stanford, Idaho, UCLA, Long Beach State, and UCSB) and they’ve lost those games by an average of 28 points. The schedule difficulty of those games is just 4 ½ points tougher than hosting Cal Poly. I’ll take Cal Poly SLO in a 2-Star Best Bet at -16 points or less and for 3-Stars at -14 or less.

Hawaii struggled early in the season without assist heavy point guard Jeremiah Ostrowski (6.5 assists per game and 1.3 steals per game) but the Warriors are 8-1 ATS recently and I still see them as undervalued. Idaho, meanwhile, is just 6-16-1 ATS under coach Don Verlin after consecutive victories (0-3 ATS this season), so I certainly don’t mind bucking the Vandals tonight. My ratings favor Idaho by just 2 points and I’ll take Hawaii in a 3-Star Best Bet at +6 points or more and for 2-Stars down to +5 points.
