Ice picks: Friday's Best NHL Bets

New York Islanders at Ottawa Senators (-160, 5.5)

The Ottawa Senators are at a breaking point in their season. Not long ago, they were just two points out of top spot in the Eastern Conference after getting on a 13-2-2 surge.

But now they head into Friday’s game with New York having lost four straight, which has dropped them all the way to sixth with a number of teams nipping at their heels.

“We’re in the thick of things and we had a pretty successful month, when you look at it as a whole,” Jason Spezza told the team’s official website. “It was a pretty daunting month and we could have put ourselves in a real tough position, but we’ve got ourselves in a position where we’re in the mix. Now we have some work to do the rest of the way.”

Spezza is pointless during Ottawa’s skid and needs to pull it together quickly.

The Islanders are 4-1-1 in their last six as John Tavares has asserted himself as one of the top young guns in the game. He was named first star of January and has 53 points this season.

Pick: Islanders

Columbus Blue Jackets at Anaheim Ducks (-230, 5.5)

It’s almost painful to read through the Blue Jackets’ post-game comments at this point.

They were burned by a clock malfunction when a late Kings goal shouldn’t have counted in their latest loss, but it just sounded like the same old story after the game.

“We have a lot of guys who have a lot to play for still,” goaltender Curtis Sanford told reporters. “There are a lot of games left and we just have to do whatever we can to win as many of them as possible.”

He doesn’t exactly exude confidence, does he?

The Blue Jackets have now dropped six in a row and the Ducks can’t afford losing any more winnable games.

With no value on the home team, we’ll play over.

Pick: Over

Pick 'n' roll: Friday's Best NBA Bets

Indiana Pacers at Dallas Mavericks (N/A)

Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle knows exactly what his team is up against Friday night. Considering he was behind the Pacers bench from 2003-2007, he’d better.

The Pacers had some success when he was drawing up the plays, but now it looks like they’re ready to take it to the next level.

"They've got all the ingredients of championship teams - they've got athleticism, length, skill and size," Carlisle told the Pacers' official website. "They're going to be a major factor."

Danny Granger has been a big part of the club’s success. He went off for 36 points in 109-99 upset of the Timberwolves and is averaging a team-high 18.3 points per game.

Right now Dallas could only dream of that type of production from Dirk Nowitzki. He is shooting just 28.2 percent in three games since his conditioning stint.

Sooner or later, Dallas is going to need him to get it going.

Pick: Pacers

Phoenix Suns at Houston Rockets (-6.5, 198)

For a two-time MVP, Steve Nash is probably never going to get as much credit as he deserves. He keeps getting it done even though he turns 38 on Tuesday.

Nash put up 30 points and 10 assists in a 120-103 blowout of New Orleans and became the franchise’s all-time leader in assists with one of those dimes.

"Obviously, when Steve (Nash) is going like that we're pretty good. He was real aggressive offensively and shot the ball well,” coach Alvin Gentry told reporters. “I thought we did a good job in our spin and roll offense of rolling and getting some more easy baskets."

The Suns needed a strong effort after getting blown out by Dallas, but easy buckets might not be as easy to come by in this matchup.

Both teams have been a solid under bet this season and Houston has played below the total in 11 of its last 15 home games.

Pick: Under

Friday’s Betting Tips
By Covers.com

Who’s hot

NBA: Cleveland has covered in four of its last five overall and in five of its last six road games.

NBA: Dallas is 8-3 against the number in its last 11 home games.

NHL: The under is 7-1-1 in Ottawa’s last nine.

NHL: St. Louis is 21-6 in its last 27 home games.

NCAAB: Rider is 9-1-1 against the spread in its last 11 overall.

Who’s not

NBA: Miami is 1-6 against the spread in its last seven overall.

NBA: New Jersey is 3-13 against the spread in its last 16 vs. Minnesota.

NHL: Columbus has lost six straight.

NHL: Calgary is 8-20 in its last 28 meetings with Chicago.

NCAAB: The over is 1-5 in Harvard’s last six.

Key stat

23 – The No. 23 Harvard Crimson have won 23 straight games at home heading into Friday’s date with Cornell. The last time the Crimson lost at home was back on Feb. 19, 2010. However, they are just 1-3 against the spread at home this season. Oddsmakers have Harvard set as a 15.5-point favorite Friday.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics – Rondo is again listed as questionable for Friday’s game against the New York Knicks. Rondo hasn’t played since hurting his wrist on Jan. 18, but coach Doc Rivers said Thursday that he hopes the shifty point guard will play Friday. “Without him,” Rivers said, “you’re pretty basic offensively, and I think you’re very easy to guard down the stretch of games. I think that’s hurt us.”

Game of the day

Miami Heat at Philadelphia 76ers (2, 193)

Notable quotable

“He did react to pressure that didn’t exist, and he was just throwing the ball places where there wasn’t even a receiver there. Imagine us getting there even faster and actually doing our jobs and getting hits on him.” – New York Giants defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul on how Tom Brady reacted to pressure in the Week 9 meeting between the two teams.

Notes and tips

The Columbus Blue Jackets have activated Jeff Carter from injured reserve and he’s expected to play Friday against Anaheim. Carter, who has heard his name in some trade rumors recently as the trade deadline nears, suffered a separated shoulder on Jan. 8. Despite missing 20 games due to injury this year, he leads the team in power play goals (five) and sits second in total goals (10). The Blue Jackets are set as big +190 underdogs.

According to a report in the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Indiana Pacers could be one of the leading candidates to land center Chris Kaman. The Pacers are said to be looking someone to back up Roy Hibbert. Kaman is in the final year of his contract with the New Orleans Hornets and has garnered some interest from a few different teams. The 7-foot center is averaging 9.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

Ryan Palmer shot a 7-under-par 64 to move atop the leaderboard before play was suspended in the first round of the Phoenix Open at Scottsdale, Ariz. More than 40 players were still on the course when play was halted due to darkness Thursday. The opening round started an hour late due to a frost delay. Palmer was 8-under through his first 15 holes before his lone bogey left him one shot ahead of Webb Simpson, who had six birdies in a seven-hole stretch in his round of 65. Simpson is the tourney favorite at +500 while Palmer sits at +1600.

Marc Lawrence

Cleveland State at Loyola Chicago
Prediction: Loyola Chicago

When Cleveland State takes their act into the Windy City Friday night to meet the Ramblers the Vikings will enter off a satisfying 20-point same season revenge win over Youngstown State. That sets the table for tonight's fray as Loyola is 4-1 ATS this campaign as a dog with revenge versus an opponent off a win. Meanwhile CSU is 1-5-1 ATS in games against avenging foes with four or more days of rest this season. With that look for the Ramblers to improve to 18-8-1 ATS in this series here tonight. Take the points. We recommend a 1-unit play on Loyola Chicago

Matt Fargo

Memphis @ Oklahoma City
PICK: Oklahoma City -9

Memphis came away with a big road win on Thursday at Atlanta and while that was a horrible call on my part, it at least sets us up for an opportunity to go against the Grizzlies again in a much tougher situation. It was the second straight victory for the Grizzlies against a quality opponent as Denver was the victim prior to that in Memphis. The Grizzlies are now two games over .500 overall but two games under .500 on the road while going 3-7 on the season against teams ranked in the top ten.

Oklahoma City is coming off a win at Dallas on Wednesday which made up for its poor effort in Los Angeles against the Clippers two nights before. The Thunder have only four losses all season long including just two in their last 14 games and a return home following a three-game roadtrip should keep them focused. Oklahoma City has had some difficulties against the elite teams, going 3-3 against teams ranked in the top ten in the league but it is 14-1 against every other team.

The travel aspect is also hurting Memphis is this is its second game in two nights and this is just the second time all season long that the Grizzlies have had to play back-to-back road games. The first time, they were hammered in Portland following a road win the night before. With the truncated schedule, it makes it even more difficult this season and on top off that, the Grizzlies are playing their fourth game in five nights and fifth game in seven nights and its been travel every day during this stretch with the exception of one.

Memphis lost to the Thunder in the playoffs last season so it would certainly like to get some revenge. The problem is that the Grizzlies have already had two shots at the Thunder at home and lost both of those games. It will get even tough on the road and even more so that they have lost three straight meetings in Oklahoma City. Memphis is 0-7 ATS in its last seven games as road underdogs between 5.0 and 10.5 points while the favorite is a perfect 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.

Jim Feist

Columbia vs. Dartmouth
Play: Dartmouth +3

After opening the Ivy League season with 4 difficult conference games, including two against powerhouse Harvard, Dartmouth gets a Columbia team that is 1-3 in the conference. The Lions are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 vs. the Ivy League. The Big Green is 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall, 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a loss. Look for a big effort from the home court to get out of the Ivy League basement. Play Dartmouth.
